Daniel Cohen is The Recepient of The Yamaha Jim Widner Scholarship

The Yamaha Jim Widner Scholarship honors the memory of JEN Founding member and legendary jazz educator, Jim Widner. This distinguished scholarship is awarded to a university/college student. The winner of this $1000 award will also receive a 1-year full individual JEN membership.
Daniel Cohen, a student at The Julliard School in New York City, is a 21-year old Israeli tenor saxophonist, composer, educator and woodwind doubler. He started playing the alto saxophone at the Kfar Saba Conservatory at the age of 11. Daniel graduated with honors in 2019 from the prestigious Thelma Yellin School of the Arts and the Tel Aviv Conservatory. In 2020, he won first place at both the Carinthia Jazz International Competition, and the Kfar Saba Wind Instrument Competition. In 2018 Daniel won the Young Jazz Ensemble Competition and performed with his ensemble at the summer and winter Red Sea Jazz festivals. In 2014, at age 13 Daniel won first place for all ages 16-21 at the International Competition for Jazz in Rostov, Russia, headed by Igor Butman. In 2017, he won second place for ages 21-30. Each summer Daniel has been awarded full scholarships for summer workshops around the world with renowned musicians. Last summer, Daniel was chosen to participate in the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Academy for a second time with his ensemble “Ingenuity”.
