Artist Spotlight: CHOREATURA Studio

CHOREATURA studio is an interdisciplinary practice founded in Tel Aviv by choreographer Marina Levakova and architect Gleb Galkin.

CHOREATURA’s main work idea is to find and research basic life concepts and feelings of the individual. Those feelings and emotions are the common ground, regardless of origin and social status. Love, anger, time perception, pain, fear and excitement are all mediators and part of a multicultural language.

What or who inspire you to create?
We are fascinated by communication, which is a key factor in any kind of action, whether good or bad. That is why we find it exciting to experiment with basic qualities of communication – emotions and feelings – as art naturally does.

What was your creative journey that has brought you to where you are in your career today?
We are in the very beginning of our path. Our mutual projects are, in a way, an exercise in looking at each other’s prejudices in relation to our expertise, both in dance and architecture.

What do you need as an artist today?
We would like to collaborate with professionals of different backgrounds and investigate ways to rethink our concepts, perceptions and habits. It is very interesting for us to try to see the world from many angles, not just from our own point of view. Sharing knowledge and different thinking approaches helps us and our partners to develop new ways of looking at issues in today’s world.

What creative project are you working on now?
Currently we’re preparing “Time Flows” project – an immersive choreographic installation based on research of time perception in the big city. To showcase these thoughts, three groups of performers, each with a unique movement style, speed, color and route, will move through the old city. They will meet one another at important public spaces – squares, cathedrals, museums, and they will arrive at the main destination for the final show.

Elusive Beauty Illustration by CHOREATURA

Along with that, we develop the “Elusive Beauty” project for the Tallinn Architecture Biennale. At the Biennale, we will create spacial pavilion for exhibiting and highlighting details in a person’s body as a self-sufficient, meaningful objects. The main material for this pavilion is a steam cloud. It will help us create both shading and highlighting effects for the human body.

What does it mean to you to have an organization like the AICF supporting artists and culture?
As we stated before, the core of our work is communication between different fields, expertises and professionals. AICF provides lots of opportunities for open and interesting dialogues about art in the context of Israeli culture..
