Not in Heaven

A group exhibition in Jerusalem Bienelle dealing with artists' unique ability to cast abstract idea into matter

"For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not too hard for thee, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say: 'Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?' Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say: 'Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, and make us to hear it, that we may do it?' But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. {S}"
(Deuteronomy ch.30: 11-14)
A verse in Deuteronomy states that God’s word "is not in heaven… and not beyond the sea," meaning God requires thoughts and actions within the scope of human abilities. One could mistake the verse to refer to geographical distances, but no. We believe it means that redemption and revelation belong neither in the supernatural over world of light—the place of souls and angels—nor in the black underworld, the primordial, demonic waters of Sheol and refaim. In other words, not up in heaven and not down beyond the sea... The covenant between Man and his creator is accessible, and can only be expressed in our terrestrial reality, because God’s whisper is here, "very near you, in your mouth and in your Mind" (Deut. 30:13).
All artworks germinate in the artist's mind, from an inner voice that’s transformed and realized through his unique ability to cast abstract idea into reality and matter. The ability to do so is rooted in an absolute understanding that there is no inherent obstacle, because "it is not in heaven." This is the core value of Art. The exhibition highlights the connection between the raw idea, the motivation to realize the idea and the actual act of artistic creation “from nothing.” This view will enable a presentation of various voices, interpretations, sources of inspiration and creative ways of realization that will harmonize individual works into a coherent and unified statement.

The works (paintings, installations and objects) offer a new reading that tries to present the inquisitive side of the artist, his journey between the raw, uncluttered idea and the question of "creation" in the present time. The works bring the viewer back to a discussion of the cultural-political origin of the artwork, while it raises questions about representations of faith and skepticism from an individual, even secular, place today. The works offer a number of perspectives that deal with our search for the "sublime" and its embodiment in reality as expressed in the framework of contemporary art.
